[edit] VEditor, the VG-88 Editor
Undoubtedly the coolest VG Product around. Get it, and consider donating something for the author, Ralph Benchetrit. Here are some screen shots:

Only the Version Two VG-88 [often just called the "vg88v2"] permits software to edit its patches, in real time. The 88's software must be upgraded internally, so not all 88s have this upgrade. If you think you'd be interested in the upgraded one, ask about it on the VG-8 Mailing List on Yahoo!, because there are some things to watch out for. Sadly, there is only this one editor program, as of early 2007. It's only for Windows PCs and completely neglected by its maker for several years now, but he is kind enough to continue to offer it for download. If it works on your Windows PC, you're in luck; if not, there's nothing to be done about it.
Update - Running Veditor on Macs With the advent of the Intel Based Macintoshes, it's now possible to run VEditor on your Mac. Previously, while you could get VEditor to launch on a Mac under something like SoftWindows, you could never get your midi hardware to work correctly.
This is no longer the case. I have successfully ran VEditor under both BootCamp (using Windows XP) as well as with Parallels. In the latter case, if you have the latest Parallels you can use the Coherence mode and have VEditor running with a dock icon and floating out in the Mac desktop in it's own window just like a normal Mac app. The only thing you need to do is tell Parallels to give access to your Midi interface over USB in the devices menu.
Of course, you'll still have to install windows drivers for your midi interface for both Parallels and Boot Camp, because, after all it still IS windows, and they haven't figured out how to actually make "Plug and Play", well plug and play.
[edit] VG-88 Pro Librarian - by MIDISYS
A great new VG-88 Librarian - very professional!
[edit] VLibrary- by Dave Scofield
This is the fantastic VG-8 Patch Librarian for Windows 95/98 that all VG-8 users with PCs should download.
[edit] Sound Diver Editor - by Ulrich (Uli) Sinn
This is a plug in for the Emagic program Sound Diver. I have yet to test this program out, but it seems to come with rave reviews. The only concern is that I have heard about the program crashing the VG-8 to the point that the unit had to be sent back to Roland. This could be a much newer version than the one in question, however use at your own risk. Check out the cool README file before you download the Mac version or Windows version.
[edit] Galaxy Librarian
Note that the librarian is Apple Macintosh only. It will store complete banks (64 patches) Galaxy from Opcode is a versatile librarian with a large user base on the Mac. Although Opcode is currently experiencing some business trouble, they're an innovative and respected software and hardware company. Their products include OMS (Open Music System), Studio Vision Pro, MAX, multiport MIDI interfaces, USB audio interfaces and many others.

[edit] Other Programs
Here are some other pieces of software you might find useful:
- VG-88 Sysex Librarian by Dan Egan

- MIDIGraphy for using sysex on a Mac. [Note: this link appears to be dead as of Saturday, January 27, 2007, but might be merely temporarily offline.]
- Sysex 97 - useful for downloading patches from this site
- VG-8 Patch Reader - by Nicholas Delonas
This nifty little program for Windows 95/98 will allow you to read the names of all the patches in a VG-8 SysEx file.
Glen created this instrument definition file for Cakewalk and uses it in his sequences to call different patches throughout the song in order not to worry about changing patches on the V and concentrate on his playing. (Choose "Save Link As..." with your web browser and save this file into your Cakewalk directory.)
